Meet Debbie
Debbie Delves ("DD") is the poster child for optimisation! Not only does her practice deliver world-class treatments, but she operates the business element like a ninja!
Debbie was our ‘member of the year’ at the 2020 Hive Practice Awards, and what Debbie is able to achieve from her small practice eclipses what many much larger practices are capable of doing.
Who: Debbie Delves
What: Dulwich Podiatry Ltd
Where: Dulwich
When: Took over the practice in 1995
Why: I wanted to do something in the medical profession but being able to have the balance of juggling both a career and a family was really important to me. So I looked into paramedical professions and after visiting a careers talk, this led me into Podiatry. I was actually eight months pregnant when I took over the practice, but it allowed me to juggle my work life with family so it ticked many of the boxes that I was looking for.
The Problem:
I was running a good business at the time, I knew my finances and metrics, I was even teaching at conferences on how to run practices as a business. But after joining The College of Podiatry as Chairman, as expected, my business took a hit. Flaws within the practice and the team then revealed themselves and unfortunately the team environment just wasn’t right as I simply wasn’t able to be there enough to direct the team better. As a result, I felt quite defeated and dragged down.
The Solution:
I knew I needed guidance. I had brought in a new team but didn’t know what the next steps were and at the time, I didn’t know who to turn to. I knew of the Hive previously and within weeks of joining we hit COVID, which gave us the time to fast-track the learnings and implement lots of positive changes.
It allowed for a fresh start and provided a new team culture from day one, through regular team meetings and half-day team days, I was able to bring the new team on board with me.
The Outcome:
I finally feel in control, and I have managed to create a business where I don’t have to physically work in the clinic. I now choose to do only 4-5 days a month on the tools providing me the time to do the fun things, like planning ahead and meeting great referrers. I feel invigorated and excited and I’m so much happier now that I am able to fully support my team.
The Future:
Enjoy continuing to develop my team and clinic culture.
Outside the Practice:
Spending time with my granddaughter, my dog, Bella and playing tennis.
Debbie was able to fix her culture to give her the opportunity to step away from the practice and spend more time getting snuggly cuddles with her little granddaughter; so what’s there to argue with there : )
Super work Debbie – you and your team are superstars!
Keep being awesome,
Katie & The HIVE Team
