Meet Hiren
Hiren is the Alan Sugar of Podiatry and, if podiatry was an olympic sport - he would be the flag bearer at the opening ceremony!
Hiren values the profession higher than anyone we know and whilst some health professionals doubt that they can charge more than £30 for an appointment, Hiren is proving day in, day out, that people will pay appropriately for exceptional healthcare.
Who: Hiren Patel
What: Flawless Feet Podiatry
Where: Currently based in 4 sites; Forest Hill, Croydon, Covent Garden & Chelsea
When: I have been a podiatrist for 22 years. I initially started as a locum and then worked directly for the NHS.
This is where I picked up all my basic skills, however, I never found it challenging. I started to do home visits and then lots of nursing homes part-time, on top of my NHS work.
This took its toll after a few years and then I decided to use my front room as a clinic. Initially, I did evenings and Saturday mornings, at the same time I got some associate positions at different clinics.
This continued until I decided to do it full-time on my own about 12 years ago.
This is when Flawless Feet was born.
Why: Like anyone, I just wanted more control of what I was doing and how I did it. I love challenges also, so I wanted to see how far I could go.
I also knew owning my own business was the way forward. At first, this was really scary and not knowing what to do and how to do it was a massive learning curve.
I made many a mistake but it kept growing so I knew I was onto a winner.
Winner of the 2021
The Problem:
The biggest challenge was going from being a single practitioner to building a team. I had the mentality that I could do it all on my own. I am sure there were trust issues also.
However, thankfully I got over that. Now I have an amazing team who I trust explicitly. Mistakes happen and I have just learned to deal with them and not get too stressed out!
I was also physically and mentally exhausted. All I did was work and even after the clinics finished I would be up doing the admin, answering calls and writing emails.
Having a young family I needed to spend more time with them and not constantly working.
The Solution:
Having sorted these challenges, things are so much better. The team all have their tasks to do and we have systemised as much as possible to make all our lives easier.
And this was down to being part of the first group of Masterminders at The Hive. Being part of this group was the single most important decision I made in my work career.
I feel part of a wider team, I have my very own board of trustees! How many podiatry practices can say that!
Since joining I have not made any decision without discussion within the group. I have grown massively not just as a business owner but as a leader of an incredible team.
What the Hive has given me is the confidence to achieve anything I want to.
Winner of the Lyndon Jones Award 2021
The Outcome:
Since joining the Hive my clinical turnover has grown 576% and my net profit by 340%.
Last month we saw a record 202 new clients and a total number of 761 patients and in turn had our highest achieving month ever.
Our Net promoter score is 93% on average for the past 3 years.
So we are in an amazing place at present. We have got through Covid and all that it brought.
I am happy and healthy and so is my family and my family at work (that’s what they tell me anyway!)
Keeping the work/life balance, is really important.
I don’t get it right all the time but its 100% better than it was.
The Future:
Expansion is what is happening. We are currently in the process of taking over an existing clinic in central London.
This will end up as a 4 – 5 room clinic and will give us the exposure we want to really get the Flawless Feet brand out there.
Outside the Practice:
I am a massive sports fan. I love my golf and football and currently Peloton-ing most days.
Liverpool FC is in my heart and spending time with my family and friends comes above anything else.
Work hard and play hard and “You will never walk alone” sums up how I like to live.
Hiren discovered what he really wanted and just went for it.
He has the courage to be himself…doesn’t shy away from fear of failure and accepts that everything is work in progress.
Hiren is a real people person and thrives on helping others overcome the limitations that prevent them from enjoying life to the full.
He is proof of the pudding that you can still lead a successful business and a team, whilst enjoying the time and freedom outside of the practice.
If you can dream it, Hiren proves you can most certainly do it!
