Meet Liz & Mark Hoyland
After soon realising that building a healthcare business is going to need commitment and discipline, they both rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty!
They have turned ideas and plans into action, creating reliable systems, and are now more organised and prepared for any curve balls that may impact the business whilst staying in line with their values and vision.
They are stronger and resilient as a result and ready to take their business to the next level of success.

The Problem:
The podiatry courses don’t teach you how to run a business!
It’s a hard lesson once you set up a practice to realise how little being a good practitioner has to do with successfully running a business!
It was tough work. We felt like we could never relax and we didn’t know how to measure ourselves against other practices.
The Solution:
So many things have changed – our culture, goals, systems, recruitment and team training. We always have our vision for the next 3-5 years and the next year. We have goals for each quarter and achieve them.
We worked with the team to nut out our team values – and they’re essential when it comes to recruitment and how we turn up to work each day. We worked out our avatar – our typical patient – and in the past year we’ve totally changed the business model so we’re doing more of the work we love.
We received an award from the Hive in December for our business breakthrough in 2021.
We know our important metrics each month and share them with the team. We really appreciate the fortnightly zoom calls with the Hive team and other business owners where we can ask our most pressing questions and help others solve their biggest issues.
One of the game changers was hiring out roles that we’re not good at – having a book keeper, a marketing company, an IT company, a graphic designer and accountants.
The Outcome:
Even after two years of Covid we have built up a cash “war chest” so we feel comfortable and prepared for any eventualities.
We are a lot more resilient now.
When big issues come up, such as Covid, of course we throw our hands up for a second, but we get down to making plans.
This year, hiring two podiatry assistants who have their own patients plus support our podiatrists, has made a huge difference in a tight hiring market.
The Future
One of the Hive resources that really struck home for us was a table showing how businesses progress from mediocre to lasting greatness. We’ve ticked lots of these boxes, but we’d love to create a business which is a hiring magnet.
Outside the Practice:
Our sons are in their 20s now, and we love doing things like going on a kayaking weekend or booking a holiday with them. Our next holiday will be to an island where we can dive, snorkel, bush walk and kayak.
Liz and Mark are committed to the work and prove that a little bit of progress every day adds up to big results.
Keep up the incredible work!
To your own success and beyond.
