Meet Adam and Ali Philips
Following in his Father's footsteps, Adam and Ali are both one of New Zealand's top progressive podiatry business owners.
Their practice is built upon the fact that 'your feet form the foundation of good health.'
Along with their passion for podiatry, they breathe their purpose through every aspect of their practice, which is the driving force behind their success.
Who: Adam & Ali Philips
What: Masterton Foot Clinic
Where: Just north of Wellington, the capital of New Zealand
When: I opened my first clinic in 2003. At the time I was running my own orthotics lab with 3-4 key clients, but I was longing to use my Clinical Skills.
Why: I loved podiatry. I wanted to do my own thing. I was also attracted to the opportunity to work and help people on a daily basis, and to be a professional with a skillset that could advance peoples lives.
Adam & Ali Philips - Power Couple!
The Problem:
Working solo initially, it was managing my time, and learning how to run a business. A very steep learning curve, but an exciting one. I felt empowered though, sometimes overwhelmed.
The Solution:
Support. A network of folk who were, or had been in the same boat. Having a coach also provided me with accountability and confidence. I have been exposed to the learnings of a high performing clinic and clinics, so it has helped me benchmark where I’m at, and where I can get better.
Probably the biggest thing I’ve learned from The Hive is how to coach my team. It has helped me to lead a team of 9, something I never would have imagined when I started on my own in 2003.
The Outcome:
Team: Grown from 3 to 9 in 6 years, or 1.5 pods to 3.5.
Revenue has doubled. Profit has doubled.
Life is actually quite busy. I do however have the ability to choose to work ‘on the tools’, rather than the business relying on me. I spend more time on developing my team, and mentoring them.
I have a little family of 3 kids and an amazing wife and mum, Ali. (She is the real boss).
The Future:
I’d like to hit a million dollars in revenue within the next 18 months.
In saying that, it’ll be the result of a team working really well – so my plans are to continue to grow our practitioner skill and confidence levels, bed down our systems and always be trying to answer the question- ‘what is the best option for my patient?’
I expect to have 4 FTE pods on by 2023. At some point I’d like to look at exiting the business, ideally through a profit share arrangement with one of our team taking over the clinical team leader role.
Outside the Practice:
Tramping (hiking). Mountain running. Fly fishing. Brewing beer. Anything involving the outdoors/nature and the elements – love it.
Adam and Ali have built their practice and their team working like a ‘well oiled machine’ as they all work towards their shared goals and common aim.
The couple are a a great example of Simon Sinek’s quote,
“Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress:
Working hard for something we love is called passion.”
Congratulations to them both and their team for allowing their purpose to steer them in the right direction.
To your success and beyond,
Katie & The HIVE Team
